Robotic Surgery
What Is Robotic Surgery?
Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive technique in which the surgeon, seated at a console away from the operating table with a high-resolution three-dimensional imaging system, performs the operation by controlling the robot’s arms through a dedicated control system.
The robot’s camera and arms are inserted into the abdomen through very small openings and positioned for the planned operation. Thanks to the robot’s specialized camera system, the surgeon sees the operating field in high resolution, in 3D and magnified. The robotic arms also allow movements beyond the anatomical limits of the human hand, with complete accuracy and high precision.
Robotic systems have made complex operations that are very difficult to perform open or laparoscopically more precise. Minimally invasive methods offer many advantages, including less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, smaller incisions and therefore less pain, and a lower risk of infection and incisional hernia.
Contrary to popular belief, the robot does not perform the operation. The robot’s camera system and its arms and instruments – the number depending on the operation – are controlled by the operating surgeon from a console positioned away from the operating table. A sterile assistant surgeon is always present at the operating table during the procedure.
When performed by properly trained and experienced teams, robotic surgery achieves very successful results.
